Affliction: Day of Reckoning Affliction: Trilogy

Affliction: Trilogy was a mixed martial arts event scheduled to be promoted by Affliction Entertainment on August 1, 2009 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.[1]

The main event was initially scheduled to feature Fedor Emelianenko against Josh Barnett, but Barnett was forced to pull out ten days before the fight after the California State Athletic Commission denied Barnett a license to fight due to him testing positive for a banned substance. The entire card was later cancelled, citing an inability to find and adequately promote a replacement. Affliction also announced it would cease all fight promoting and would return as a UFC sponsor.[2]

Other proposed matchups included a battle between lightweight standouts as 2007 IFL Grand Prix finalist Chris Horodecki was to fight Dan Lauzon.

The main card was to be available via PPV, and the undercard broadcast on HDNet.[3]

Notes

The two M-1 Global fights would not have been aired on HDNet.[15]

Tim Sylvia was removed from the card as a result of being medically suspended due to his KO loss to Ray Mercer. Affliction VP Tom Atencio was quoted as saying “It’s his second knockout in a row, and I don’t want to take a chance on anything,” This was due to the dramatic fashion of the knockout just less than 60 days before Sylvia’s scheduled bout against Paul Buentello, and his previous loss to Fedor Emelianenko.

A rumored bout between Takanori Gomi and Brett Cooper was not signed as the fighters could not agree upon a catchweight.[16] Cooper was then scheduled to face Akbarh Arreola at welterweight, but was removed from the card after being knocked out on the June 27 Ultimate Chaos card.

There was a planned bout between Vitor Belfort and Gegard Mousasi, but Belfort, who had recently moved down to middleweight, made a statement that he did not want to fight at light heavyweight any longer, and Mousasi stated that he could no longer make middleweight. In response, Mousasi made a challenge for a catchweight bout against Belfort.[17][18]

Aftermath

Many of the fighters on the card were able to find another promotion to work for shortly after Affliction Entertainment's demise. The Renato Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi bout was moved to Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg for Sobral's Light Heavyweight Title,[19] while Jay Hieron fought Jesse Taylor on the same card.[20] Zuffa also picked up several fighters with the LC Davis vs. Javier Vasquez bout being moved to WEC 42, the Mark Hominick vs. Deividas Taurosevicius bout being moved to WEC 43, the Ben Rothwell vs. Chase Gormley bout moved to UFC 104 and Vitor Belfort main eventing UFC 103. As well Paul Daley, Dan Lauzon, and Rafaello Oliveira have signed contracts with Zuffa.[21]

The Jessie Gibbs vs. Rob Broughton bout was moved to M-1 Global Presents Breakthrough.[22] While Lucio Linhares from the other M-1 Global bout was also moved to the card, with a new opponent, he ended up fighting Mikhail Zayats.[23]
